There are 3 people in today’s conversation, Wang, Li, and the waiter.
Upon sitting down in a restaurant, we first have to order, therefore Wang said to the waiter: That means, do you have any specials today? Here “招牌菜” means specials. Specials are usually a restaurants most popular dishes, chef’s best dishes or most ordered ones.
So, what were the specials? The Waiter said specials are Sweet and Sour ribs and Spicy Chicken, then Wang said: 那就各来一份吧 “各”means one of each, so one sweet and sour rib and a spicy chicken.
Is that alright?
Wang asked Li’s opinion and said: 可以吗？ Which means, is that alright? This phrase “可以吗？” frequently comes up in the Chinese conversation, usually, the person who made a decision will in turn ask others “可以吗？” to get their opinions. E.g. I bought the 5 pm flight ticket is that alright?
Li told Wang, she was fine with both dishes. Have gotten Li’s approval, the ordering was done. Though a meal must come with drinks, so Wang asked again: Do you like any drinks?
Li declined Wang’s suggestion and said water was fine, afterwards, Wang ordered 两碗蛋炒饭, “碗”means bowl.
意思就是just a moment, please。
After the ordering, the server politely said, 请稍等, which means a moment please.
