Mandarin Chinese has 2 parts. One is the Chinese characters, called Hanzi which is used for writing and reading. Another part is Chinese pinyin, called Pinyin which is used for speaking and listening.
For an example, a Mandarin Chinese “你好 nǐ hǎo” , meaning “Hello”, has 2 parts:
1. Chinese characters, Hanzi is "你好"
2. Chinese pinyin, Pinyin is "nǐ hǎo" .
