Structure of Chinese characters can in general be divided into two types, one is the single component and another is the compound.


The Chinese characters which belong to single component type have only one complete and independent component. However, most of the Chinese characters are made up of two or more components.


They belong to the compound component type which has several structural forms for constructing a Chinese character.

Single Component

  • The Chinese characters to have only one complete and inseparable component.


Compound Component


  • Triangle Structure: it has a triplet component in triangle shape.


  • Top-Bottom Structure: Based on the proportion of top and bottom parts, top-bottom structure can be sub-divided into four sub-structures.


  • Left-Right Structure: Based on the proportion of left and right parts, left-right structure can be sub-divided into four sub-structures.


  • Enclosed Structure: Based on the direction of the enclosed sides, enclosed structure can be subdivided into seven sub-structures.
