Chinese Grammar

The Chinese grammar section explains the main grammatical structures you need to know in order to make your own sentences.  There are example sentences to show how the language is used.

In this unit, learn to:

  1. Use the phase '有点儿' as an adverb to indicate 'a little' in level .  It is often used to express something which is unsatisfactory, impatient, dissatisfied or unfulfilled expectations.

    The structure is 有点儿 + Adjective / Verb.

    I’m a little tired.


  2. Use the word ‘一下’  after a verb:

    • a) to express an action is done briefly or casually

    • b) to indicate an attempt to do something

      The structure is Subject + Verb + 一下 + ( Object ).

      I feel sleepy and want to have a rest.

      Please wait for a while.


  3. Use the word '还' to express that something is still happening or an action is continuing:

    e.g 他还在睡觉。
    He is still sleeping.


  4. Use the modal particle '呢' to confirm a fact or convince someone:



    It’s still early.

    It's too far. It will takes eight hours by plane.

Chinese Vocabulary and Writing

The Chinese vocabulary and writing section introduces new Chinese vocabulary you need to know in order to understand the language.  For each new vocabulary, you learn what it means, how to pronounce and write it. 

Having a good vocabulary will help you improve your language level and become a more confident speaker of Mandarin.  Practising Chinese writing is often one of the best ways to improve your vocabulary.


Chinese character copybooks available online or in printed format enable you to practise your Chinese writing in a stroke by stroke manner.  


In this unit, learn how to pronounce and write new vocabulary below:

  • 还 [ hái ] still, yet

  • 别 [ bié ] Don't

  • 孩子 [ hái zi ] Child, kid

  • 教室 [ jiào shì ] Classroom

  • 考试  [ kǎo shì ] Test, exam

  • 课 [ kè ] Class, lesson

  • 累 [ lèi ] Tired

  • 忙 [ mánɡ ] Busy

  • 时间 [ shí jiān ] Time

  • 晚上 [ wǎn shɑnɡ ] Evening, night

  • 休息 [ xiū xi ] To take a rest

  • 希望 [ xī wànɡ ] To hope, to wish

  • 一下 [ yí xià ] Indicate a brief action / an attempt

  • 准备 [ zhǔn bèi ] To prepare
